Gaby Tirta (b. Jakarta, Indonesia. 1989) is a multimedia artist working across fiber art, mixed media, photography, and social practice. Moving from the layered, resist-based logic of textile traditions and the precision of graphic design, her works sit at the intersection of cultural inheritance, personal mythology, and material storytelling. What gets protected, what gets exposed, what transforms in the crossing.

A designer by trade and an artist by way of living, Tirta spent years shaping visual narratives for other people before turning that practice toward her own. She leads creative partnerships at Team Spirit Was Here, a collaborative studio. Her work draws from the textures of diaspora, family, and the spaces between languages, geographies, and ways of knowing. Working in mixed media projects that encompass textile, print, assemblage, and interactive experience, she is interested in the stories that live in objects, in process, and in the body. Her background in graphic design informs how she constructs meaning: the relationship between word and image, the pacing of a visual narrative, the architecture of a composition. She trained in traditional batik and natural dye techniques at Threads of Life in Ubud, Bali, and received a grant to continue developing her textile practice. Her current work uses resist-based processes, found materials, and family objects to ask what gets carried across oceans and generations, and what gets made new.

Tirta has exhibited at Colours Gallery and Portland State University. Her interactive and community-based projects include Sit With Us, an installation at the Freedom to Read Book Fair, and Significant Beings, a community zine for Asian American Portlanders commissioned by the Regional Arts & Culture Council. She holds a BS in Graphic Design from Portland State University. She lives in Portland, Oregon.
