Gaby Tirta lives and works in Portland, Oregon as an interdisciplinary artist and designer primarily exploring themes of identity, memory, place, and material lineage. Working across batik, natural materials, and textile, her practice navigates the textures of diaspora, family, and the spaces between cultures.

A designer by training and an artist by living, Tirta spent years building visual narratives for others before turning the practice on herself. As lead of Team Spirit Was Here, she brings social practice and community design into her collaborative creative process, shaping how she constructs meaning as an artist: the relationship between word, image, audience, and community.

She studied batik and natural dye techniques at Threads of Life in Ubud, Bali. Both her community-based projects and studio work have been and continue to be supported and commissioned by the Regional Arts & Culture Council, and she is a 2027 artist-in-residence at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology.
